List of Missing Doctor Who Episodes (by
Tim Harris) First posted to the internet: Sunday 7th April 2013. Updated Wednesday 16th October 2013. Mildly spruced-up Sunday 15th November 2015. |
Disappointingly, 97 black and white episodes of
Doctor Who made in the 1960s (99 including 2 original edits of episodes
from Planet of Giants) no longer seem to exist, at least not in the
BBC archives. In 2013 nine episodes (Enemy of the World 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and The Web of Fear 2, 4, 5, 6) became the most recently re-discovered episodes and hope remains more will turn up in the future. There are also two missing Doctor Who connected episodes of another 1960s series, Out of the Unknown, that the world at large needs greater awareness of. These therefore also form part of the list of missing episodes. For the first three Doctor Who series (until The Savages), story episodes had individual titles but those stories they belong to are now widely known by an umbrella title: it's still possible that throughout the world people have episodes they do not know are missing. Any surviving canisters of thought-to-be-lost Doctor Who episodes are likely to have the individual on-air title written on them and not the umbrella title. Air Lock is part three of Galaxy 4 and it's Air Lock that would have appeared on the canister. The canisters likely also show the Production Code assigned to each story and these are included here in the first column. There are several lists of missing episodes on the internet but one more won't harm the process of enlightening the world as to what is missing, especially during the series' 50 anniversary year. The BBC itself has a list of missing episodes at... http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/missingepisodes.shtml ...but this does not list the individual episode titles for missing episodes and uses the umbrella titles. It's also not up-to-date as at the time of writing. This page then refers to The Treasure Hunt website which can be found at... http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/treasurehunt/ ...but which has a claimer at the top which says "...we're no longer updating this page" and is not up-to-date either. Hopefully the contact details are still active for anyone returning lost episodes: if you find a Yeti episode sitting on a toilet in Tooting Bec please contact The Treasure Hunt team. |

Crisis (original
edit) The Urge To Live This was to originally have been a 4-part story and was recorded as such. The 3rd and 4th episodes were then condensed into 1 episode, titled Crisis as per the original title of the 3rd part and was broadcast as such. It is more than likely that the original 2 episodes (even above all the other episodes listed on this page) do not exist in any format but this would not be a full and accurate list of missing episodes without their being mentioned here. And you just never know. It would be nice to think that out there somewhere could be footage of The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan that we've never seen or heard before. |

Let's also hear it for... Out of the Unknown
Whilst it would be good news for any of the missing episodes of this series to turn up, there are two that are of especially great interest as they have connections to Doctor Who: Get Off My Cloud (which featured Daleks and The Tardis), and The Prophet, which features robot suits that were later used in the Doctor Who story The Mind Robber. There's an amazing book available (the cover is shown to the left) which is a very detailed guide to the series as a whole and can be found at: http://www.kaleidoscopepublishing.co.uk/books-ootu.html The book features John Cura Telesnaps where they exist and details plot, production and visual material in a hefty tome comprising around 496 large-size pages. Highly recommended. It would be nice if The BBC would repeat the episodes that do still exist but only Thirteen To Centaurus has made it onto BBC 4 in recent years to my own knowledge. Or a DVD release would be a very pleasing reality. |

The Prophet 69 or so John Cura Telesnaps exist of this episode, some featuring the robots that later appeared in Doctor Who story The Mind Robber. Some audio recording exists for this episode but not for the whole episode (although it would be nice to think somebody/ies may have recorded it on a home reel-to-reel tape recorder when the episode was transmitted). |

Get Off My Cloud The Daleks and Tardis are known to be fictional in the episode but are drawn into existence either through dreams or mind games. Sadly no Telesnaps appear to exist for this episode whilst some audio recording exists, though not for the whole production (although it would be nice to think somebody/ies may have recorded it on a home reel-to-reel tape recorder when the episode was transmitted). A few photos are known to exist but they do not contain The Daleks or Tardis. One of the photos appears on the book cover featured elsewhere on this page, in the fourth of the pictures contained within circles (the two men looking like they're in Lost In Space style costumes). |
